Trash Day

April 12, 2012

Maybe it’s just me, but a day game after a day game (following a travel day) seems unusual. It happens fairly often when teams travel to Wrigley Field, but a Thursday game against the Washington Nationals at whatever-the-name-of-their-ballpark-is? Let’s just say that I think it’s odd.

Moving on…

Naysayers of the Mat Latos deal are filled with glee today after the guy failed to get a win. Again. For the second time.

The rest of us intelligent people are pretty pleased with how well he pitched today. Even it was just for 5.0 innings.

Right now, I’m just trying to figure out what Alfredo Simon’s role is on this team. Is he really the guy the Reds are going to go with in an extra-inning game? Yes, Chapman wasn’t available today, but in that situation why not put Sean Marshall in the game? I realize that, by definition, Marshall is the closer, but he’s fully capable of pitching more than one inning in relief.

Simon has given up 3 hits and 2 runs in 2.2 innings. I’m no manager, but he seems like the last guy I want on the mound in a tight game.

Oh, and the Reds have scored just 8 runs in the last 4 games.

There’s a reason the Orioles put him on waivers. The Orioles, for God’s sake. What did the Reds honestly think was going to happen in that situation?

Yeah…but “he’s big and he throws hard”… if I had a nickle for every time I heard THAT line and it DIDN’T work out… wow.

Plus… he was in PRISON for allegedly shooting his cousin after firing a gun into the air on New Years?! Well played.

But he’s big and he throws hard….

OK, the Reds are still not hitting and scoring runs and I’m still a 6 out of 10 on the freak out meter. The first 2 weeks of the season, weak execution offensively and solid pitching by the opponent accounts for their current record. The division leading Redbirds were anemic offensively last night, but that’s what solid pitching does. It means the other team isnt getting good wood on the ball over several innings in a ball game.

Not sure if I’m witnessing the ‘sky is falling’ treatment amongst Reds fan, well ok I am and we are. But whats really happening is impatience. Dusty Baker isn’t the central reason of this lack in production.

Another Butch Walker song reference in the title. I like it.
