Making Plans for Nigel
I just got finished reading John Fay’s column about the Reds’ 2010 payroll.
One thing that really jumped out at me was how different the 2011 payroll will look after Harang/Arroyo/Cordero are gone (either during or after this season… probably).
Together, the three of them combine for $35.5 million of the current payroll:
- Aaron Harang $12.5 million
- Francisco Cordero $12 million
- Branson Arroyo $11 million
That’s well over half of the $63.60 million owed to 15 players in 2010.
It’s still too early to tell what this 2010 Reds team is going to be like, but with that much “extra” money to play with in 2011 (assuming the Reds keep payroll in the same $70 million range — which is not a safe assumption at all), you have to wonder what the Reds plan on doing with it.
Grab a solid free agent in the off-season?
Use the money to lock up players like Jay Bruce and Joey Votto?
Sign Neifi Perez to a long-term deal?
