Wild, Wild West

On July 8th Homer Bailey was coming off two pretty impressive starts. A lot of people were saying, “See! This is why we need to be patient with this guy.”
I wasn’t one of those people.
For those of you who are Homer Bailey fans, please enlighten me how 2.2 innings of 8-hit, 9-run (6 earned) ball is something that justifies the Reds’ continued investment in this guy. Because I’d love to hear it.
Someone will inevitably say that Bailey is young and that it takes time to mature as a pitcher. To which I will respond with:
- Cole Hamels
- Tim Lincecum
- Felix Hernandez
- Scott Kazmir
All of those guys were hyped just as much as Bailey, and none of them needed the learning-curve that Bailey has needed.
With the trade deadline approaching, please, please, please trade this guy while we can still get something in return.

Yeah you did see this coming. Props.
I’m waiting on Homer to show up to a game in the Batman suit

While those are good examples there are plenty of examples of guys who were late bloomers, and at just 22 Bailey is not quite in that category yet. THis was a terrible start and I agree he doesnt look major league ready yet, but he had a couple of good games at the pro level so even if he gets sent back down he made some progress this season. As for investment, what investment? He makes peanuts right now. The Reds have absolutely nothing to lose for the next couple of seasons and they have every reason to keep giving him chances to become a major league ball player. Trading him now (or even 2 weeks ago) wouldn’t have brought back much in return.
I also think the Reds are guilty of having messed with him too much. Trying to fix mechanics and what-not instead of just letting him pitch his game. If Bailey finds his way to the Cardinals he’d probably become a perennial cy-young candidate because they know how to develop young pitching. Yes Bailey is a headcase but our organization has some issues as well.
I agree with movie triva game’s comment on the reds messing with Homer, also remember last year when Ceuto would have something go wrong he would make it worse for himself, like Homer did.
I know.. lets get Mario Soto here to fix him like he did Jonny last year.
Last year it seemed like every time things started to go bad and Mario Soto showed up around the clubhouse the starters responded. Maybe that should tell management something about having Soto as the Reds pitching coach, especially since Volquez and Cueto are you to studs and he relates to them so well.
