Digging in the Dirt
The most surprising thing to come out of last night’s game wasn’t the continued — and now incredibly annoying — struggles of Jay Bruce and Willy Taveras, nor was it Johnny Cueto’s seven innings of four-hit ball, it was actually that Ron Villone is still pitching.
Seriously?
Did Jim Bowden really dig that deep into the former-Reds pile to find players to fill his (former) team? Wow. I just wish that Bowden was still around to deal with the cluster that will be signing Stephen Strasburg.
Speaking of the draft, the Reds took a Leake* by selecting Mike Leake (RHP, Arizona State) with the 8th pick. I hear he’s pretty good, but I refuse to get excited about any draft pick (thank you, Brandon Larson).
* I’m sure I’m not the first one to say that, but I couldn’t resist.
Harang better shut down the Nationals tonight. That’s all I have to say.

Refreshing to see someone who doesn’t take a whole lot of stock in a draft pick. Everyone is getting out these scouting reports for these guys. Let them pitch against real competition and then see what you have. Homer Bailey should have been an all-star twice already if we go just by the hype of these guys.
The Nats made so much progress with Leatherpants … NOT!
I believe Leake is a junior – so if he doesn’t want to sign, he can stay in school. Owner Bob doesn’t seem to care for the draft the unsignable strategy. Looking at the numbers, Leake reminds me of Brandon Clausson. Oh boy!
