Time For Change

April 25, 2009

Enough of this “it’s still early” crap.  The Reds offense is anemic and major changes need to be made before it’s too late to matter.

Two piss-poor pitching performances aside (thank you, Arroyo & Volquez), the offense is clearly the #1 problem (among many problems) this team has.

We can’t continue to cross our fingers and hope the starting pitching is strong enough to support the team while the offense flails away like a bunch of one-armed fools playing water polo.

(Don’t ask me what that last sentence is all about — that’s just how I picture the Reds at the plate right now, okay?)

Let’s take a look at the 2009 Cincinnati Reds version of Murderer’s Row.  Or as I like to call them, Star-Maker’s Row.  Why Star-Makers?  Because every pitcher who faces the Reds’ offense looks like a star.

Star-Makers Row

1. Joey Votto: .358

{Insert sound of a slide whistle}

2. Willy Taveras: .275

3. Jay Bruce: .245

{Insert another sound of a slide whistle}

4. Chris Dickerson: .195

{Insert yet another sound of a slide whistle}

5. Brandon Phillips: .161

6. Jerry Hairston Jr.: .161

{Hire full-time slide whistle player}

7. Alex Gonzalez: .152

{Slide whistle}

8. Edwin Encarnacion: .145

John Fay says it’s time for Adam Rosales.  I say – why not?  However, I don’t agree that he should play 3B (despite Encarnacion’s struggles).

Can Rosales play leftfield?  If not, can someone teach him?  Like, by tomorrow? I understand that Chris Dickerson is doing a bang-up job out there in left, but humor me.

Hell, put Micah Owings in left and bring up Homer Bailey to take his spot in the rotation.  Bailey can give up five runs a game just as easily as Owings can.

Oh, and Owings is on the mound tomorrow.  Wonderful.

    You call up Rosales for his bat and you rotate him around. If he hits you find a place for him, I don’t know why Baker would be baffled where to play him. Like you said there are at least 3 positions he could upgrade.

    can you continue to rant on the Reds lack of offense. I’d be happy w/ the kind of run production they had on Sunday, everyday. But I think this production on Sunday will convince Dusty that there isn’t a problem and thus delays a call up by weeks. It’s a shame that our manager goes with his gut and likes who he knows even if they’re awful. Does anyone else think Volquez should have been takin out after the 4th walk in a row? No-hitter be damned? That’s a W for the Reds (more than likely) if Dusty makes the right move there.’

    I’m glad the Reds won (and put up big numbers) on Sunday, but until I see this team do it consistently (and it doesn’t have to be eight runs a game), I won’t be convinced that the offensive struggles are behind us.

    Believe me, CLove, if there’s one thing I can do well and often it’s complain.
