A Shot in the Arm
It figures. Less than 24 hours after I was blabbing on about there being no exciting news in Reds Land, a video surfaces of Edinson Volquez carrying a gun.
Oh, dios mio! No es muy bien.
Now, if it was David Weathers, Josh Fogg, or Gary Majewski, et al. that were caught with the gun, I wouldn’t be concerned (you see, they don’t have any accuracy, so they wouldn’t be able to shoot me…), but Volquez — when he was in Laos he nailed a guy from a thousand yards with a rifle shot in high wind. Maybe eight or ten other guys in the world could make that shot.
Or maybe that was Martin Riggs.
Either way, I’m not too concerned (or bothered) by this. If it was Brandon Phillips sitting in the car, then we’re having a different conversation, but Volquez is from — and was in — a different country (or my neighborhood) when this happened, and different countries have different rules. Not that it excuses him from carrying a gun, but I’m sure 99% of the population of Kentucky shouldn’t be carrying guns either, but you don’t see me complaining about it.
Simply put, this was a stupid move by a young player, and nothing we haven’t seen a dozen times before from assorted Cincinnati Bengals players. I expect the Reds to sit Edinson down (with a translator, of course), and explain to him the stupidity of his actions, and possibly suspend him for a few games (but I doubt that).
You have to admit, though – that was a pretty sweet gun.
