With a Little Help from My Friends

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I’ve been unable to attend a Major League Baseball game this season. Which would’ve been the first summer since 1983 that I did not attend at least one baseball game.
But then on Monday, while instant-messaging with my friend over at Cubs Masochist, I learned that he had just won an all-expenses paid trip for two to Boston to see the Chicago White Sox play the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
Obviously still drunk from the night before, this same friend asked me if I wanted to join him. Sucker!
I checked my calendar (it was open), I asked my wife if it was okay (her opinion didn’t matter), then I quickly informed my friend that we were going to Boston. More specifically, we were going to Fenway Park!
Screw that urinal trough called Wrigley Field, Fenway Park is The Best Pallpark in all of baseball. Period.
Yes, even better than Riverfront Stadium.
There, I said it.
This is the one baseball stadium I’ve always wanted to see, and now I get to see it - thanks to a bloody Cubs fan. Go figure.
We’ll be sitting in the stands as Red Sox fans (to ensure our asses remain un-kicked), but I’ll be quietly rooting for a White Sox victory and a Ken Griffey, Jr. homerun (because my friend has never seen Junior play before).
If I had any kids, I’d demand a DNA test, but one day if I have kids, I’ll be proud to tell them, “Yeah, I’ve been to Fenway Park, and it was wicked cool. Now go clean up your damn room!”
I’m an ass like that.
So, we fly out tonight, attend the game tomorrow night, and we’ll be back in Chicago (hungover, I’m sure) on Sunday. It’s hard to believe that it took me until the end of August to see Ken Griffey, Jr. play this season - and when I do, he’s on the White Sox, and I’ll be seeing him in Boston – but those are the cards I’ve been dealt. I’m not complaining.
I’ll post pictures next week.
Needless to say, my in-depth coverage of the Cincinnati Reds pennant race will have to wait until I get back.
To the 0.01% of you who were offended by the picture above – I apologize. To the 99.99% of you who weren’t – you’re welcome.
