Sphincter Says What?

June 18, 2008

If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to smash your head through your computer monitor, read this quote from He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named about his 1-5, four-runners-left-on-base performance last night:

“I thought I had good at-bats.”

Right, in that one game back in 2003.

“You can’t worry about results.”

I’m sorry, what?!

“People look at charts and worry about results.”

Yes, and those people are called “Good Baseball Players.” And you know what Good Baseball Players do? They make adjustments in an attempt to improve.

“You’ve got to maintain your approach.”

Well, it’s gotten you this far.  No, wait!  Since when do you have an approach at the plate?  Seriously, since when?

“You have your ups and downs.”

Mostly downs, but whatever.

“Could I be playing better? Sure.”

And the Understatement of the Year goes to…

“I’ve been in this situation before.”

Just your whole career.

“You’ve got to keep playing.”

Says who?  Oh, Dusty Baker, that’s right.

“You’ve got to keep playing.” I love it!  When did this dumbass ever start playing?

C’mon, Korey has an approach: swing at first pitch and hopefully pop up. If that fails, strike out. If, by some statistical aberration Korey gets on base, by all means, get thrown out stealing ….

the first couple of weeks he looked alright to me. I think he hit a couple of homeruns and started trying to drive more balls to maybe have a breakout power season or something, because then his swing became a very exaggerated upper cut which resulted in so many pop ups and weak flys. What disgusts me the most is how many times he’s been picked off, thrown out, caught in no mans land etc. The one thing he was supposed to have going for him was good baserunning skills. He looks worse than any rookie I have ever seen on the basepaths. Of course the fans have been hating him since day 1 so I think with all the negative energy this was a doomed signing, but nontheless nearly all the blame lays at his doorstep and his inability to adjust like you mentioned.

This team has so many problems right now, this is really just a sidebar. They aren’t getting the pithing and collectively they are the worst clutch hitting team I have ever watched. I don’t have a solution other than dumping Brook Jacoby and bringing in a respectable coach who actually has a track record of being a good major league hitter. Still we are stuck with the players we have, but first thing’s first you have to bring in the proper mentors. And here’s a very serious question: why isn’t Mario Soto the pitching coach at this juncture? Dick Pole? Come on! These were poor coaching signings and they are part of the equation here.

I realize the chump isn’t to blame for all of the Reds’ problems, but it sure is fun to pretend it is.

Can we separate those two, Dusty & He-man. This man love is getting bad. Nothing is making sense anymore.

As a UK-based Cubs fan, I found your blog on google and read a few of your other Cubs posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader. Keep up the good work. Look forward to reading more from you in the future.
